Navigating the Parenting Journey: Finding Peace Amidst the Chaos
Are you a parent constantly grappling with questions like:
"Am I doing a good job raising my kids?"
"Am I teaching them enough?"
"Will they be successful?"
"Do they have everything they need?"
If you’re a dedicated parent, these thoughts likely occupy a significant part of your mind. It’s often the conscientious parents who ponder these concerns, while those who may not prioritize their role might not think about them as deeply.
As a homeschool mom for the past 13 years, these questions are magnified for me. I strive to ensure my children have all the resources, support, and social opportunities they need to thrive.
Recently, I had an enlightening conversation with a gentleman from my church, a grandfather who shared his life story. Growing up in the streets of Brooklyn, he faced many challenges and didn’t find his footing until later in life. After becoming a father and grandfather, he dedicated his life to mentoring kids in need, spending his weekends at a juvenile detention center.
What struck me during our conversation was his perspective on parenting. He emphasized that even the bare minimum—providing resources, time, and encouragement—can make a significant difference in a child’s life. He suggested that whether or not parents are together, fostering a positive co-parenting relationship or connecting kids with supportive adults—like coaches, mentors, or tutors—can create multiple touchpoints of encouragement for children.
He reassured me that simply being present, offering positive words, and spending quality time with my kids puts me ahead of many children he encounters in the juvenile system. In his experience, even minimal parental engagement can lead to positive outcomes for kids.
This insight resonated with me deeply, especially given my concerns about my children’s education and the resources I provide. Hearing from someone who works closely with at-risk youth gave me a sense of relief. He affirmed that my efforts as a parent will lead to positive results.
So here’s a little parenting tip for you: you’re likely doing better than you think. Embrace the journey and remember that your presence and support matter immensely.
